    CBBT Striper Report

Wednesday, January 2, 2008, 06:23 PM EST [General]

It is that time of year again, chasing big stripers around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT). Right now we are catching low to mid 30" fish on a consistent basis. The big 40+" fish have not a made a good showing this year, like they did last year. We are crossing our fingers that they are still north and that they will show up this month. The best way to target these fish during the day is to fish the structure around the bridge with sinking lines and a weighted fly. The other possibility is fishing under birds, sometimes there will be fish under them. In the evening you can fish the light line and sight fish to these fish lined up in the shadows. This requires a floating or intermediate line and a weighted fly. Alot of times these fish are a few feet down and you need to get the fly right in there grill to coax them to strike. If you need anymore information or are in the area shoot me a message with any questions. Tight Lines.

    Native Ultimate 14.5 Kayak

Wednesday, October 3, 2007, 11:16 AM EST [General]

Picked up my new used Ultimate yesterday. I think it is probably the best fishing kayak out there at the moment. I like a sit-in kayak because I like to keep my gear protected from the elements. This kayak is so stable you can stand in it and get in and out of it with ease, just like a sit on top. I fished in one on Saturday and was able to pole myself around on the flat standing up. I was also able to stand in it sideways and facing forward with no problems at all. The seat design is nice because you can rig it for tandem or pull the front seat out and slide the back to the middle for a single. The hull design is a tunnel hull, so it paddles ok, but don't expect the speed of a v hull. For me that is ok, because I normally fish this in the inlets where I probably won't paddle more than 6 or 7 miles round trip in a day. This was about the distance I did Saturday and found it quite enjoyable. Here is the website if you would like to find out more information. http://www.nativewatercraft.com/

    Speck fishing at night

Friday, September 28, 2007, 12:55 PM EST [General]

This time of year I enjoy speck fishing during the day and at night. Speckled trout are ambush predators and will take any and every oppurtunity they have to fill there stomachs, day or night. My tactics change slightly between nighttime and daytime, since the visual factor is not as important. I prefer to use sound and the speckled trouts lateral line to guide them to my fly. A black deer hair slider or a black rattle clouser always seem to do the trick. On the incoming tide these fish will move up into the shallows and feed heavily. Remember that these fish are schooling fish when they are below 18"-20" in length. If you catch one in this size range, there are usually more. Be sure to work that area thoroughly.  Once they get bigger they tend to be more of a loner, not to say that there won't be other trout around.  If you fish an area with alot of current don't forget to check out the edges of rip lines and anywhere there is good current over a food source, such as an oyster bar. These fish will setup in these types of places and feed throughout the tide cycle. When I am fishing with strong current in these rips I like to use an intermediate or sinking line to get the fly down to these fish. I hope this helps, please leave us any comments on tactics you have used or if this helped you catch a speck at night.

    I am addicted

Friday, September 28, 2007, 01:39 AM EST [General]

Hi, I am George and I am a fly fishing addict. I heard there are 12 step programs, but I think I am getting along just fine. I am really stoked to see this site, we need something like this in the community to help bring people together. I am sad to see Saltwater Fly Fishing go, but it looks like American Angler is going to come back bigger and better. I look forward to exchanging stories and information with everyone. Peace out !!!
