Fly Fishing The Mid West - Year End

Sunday, December 30, 2007, 04:47 PM EST [General]

12-29-07 Spoke to soon, Ice in the guides and snow in the air . Good day of fishing even with numb fingers.

Encountered a unique situation that I would appreciate other view points on how it could have been better handled. Two bank fishing spin fishermen were working up the river  when they passed me by and managed to hook into a nice 14 inch Brown trout that they landed and then threw on the bank. I politely pointed out to these two rather large gentlemen that the regs for the river are that the creel limit for the river was 5 fish of which only one could be a Brown trout and that the Brown trout had to be a minimum of 18 inches in length. Their non-verbal hand gesture indicated that the regs did not apply to them. What would you have done differently? This river receives a fair amount of pressure and if the regs are not followed there will be no resource to regulate.

    Hey Tim,
No worries, I just moved down here from Michigan a few years ago and only found out that Ohio had trout the spring before last.
I posted a Public access map for the Mad in my photo gallery hope it's of some help.
I fish #1 #2 as a rule I'm going to check out #1 in the morning...

That's not a big surprise being Ohio in all, If your around Urbana you should try the bridge on 36 just west of town. 12-13" fish are fairly common, nice piece of river as well..

    Cheers

    Hey Tim,
Bellefontaine is about 35 min north of Springfield and yes taking anything off the top this time of a year is a blast. I caught a fish on almost every cast I could get up in where they were rising....
I fish the Mad River from Urbana to East Liberty
