    getting the line wet

Monday, May 12, 2008, 07:00 PM EST [General]

I have been out a couple of times on the local river and caught my first smallmouth (truly small), not to mention several trees and bushes. The fact that I also found some morels has been making the trips more encouraging.

I purchased a set of hip boots as they were the only thing I could find locally, and while they serve a purpose I am not very impressed. It has become obvious that waist and chest waders are worth the investment. What are you using? Do you use the separate boots?

I am looking forward to that first smallie of size.....

    My first few practice casts....

Friday, April 11, 2008, 05:18 PM EST [General]

Thanks for the tips on the Mad River. I was actually driving over it today on my way from Newark to Troy going the back roads via Springfield.

My rod is complete with the new line and my son and I were in the back yard practicing casts. I invented serveral new knots in the end of the line very quickly. I can see this is going to take a lot more practice before hitting any streams with trees and brush nearby. Aaron did pretty good, maybe that is because he doesn't have any habits that need to be changed.

    Learning Fly Fishing

Monday, April 7, 2008, 09:15 PM EST [General]

I've decided it is time to learn about fly fishing. I have been reading quite a bit and am excited to actually get out and try it. My son and I went steelhead fishing, for the first time, in Michigan in late March. He caught is first large fish, a beautiful steelhead. He hooked one other but lost it, and missed a couple more. As for me, no opportunities at all, but I sure enjoyed his enthusiasm.

I just purchased my first rod, and reel, with the help of many different web sites and forums. I have my backing on the reel and just received my line and leader. I plan to go out and practice before actually hitting any of the streams.

So, I live in Newark OH, just east of Columbus. If anyone has any suggestions on someplace nearby to "get my feet wet" let me know. We have family in NE Indiana and there are several places in this area I plan to hit as well.

    Best,

    Gary
