    Learning Fly Fishing

Monday, April 7, 2008, 09:15 PM EST [General]

I've decided it is time to learn about fly fishing. I have been reading quite a bit and am excited to actually get out and try it. My son and I went steelhead fishing, for the first time, in Michigan in late March. He caught is first large fish, a beautiful steelhead. He hooked one other but lost it, and missed a couple more. As for me, no opportunities at all, but I sure enjoyed his enthusiasm.

I just purchased my first rod, and reel, with the help of many different web sites and forums. I have my backing on the reel and just received my line and leader. I plan to go out and practice before actually hitting any of the streams.

So, I live in Newark OH, just east of Columbus. If anyone has any suggestions on someplace nearby to "get my feet wet" let me know. We have family in NE Indiana and there are several places in this area I plan to hit as well.

    Best,

    Hey Gary,
As Troutkilla pointed out, The Mad River is your closest Trout stream, The head water starts near me in Zanefield (You can fish this far North but it really isn't worth it). The best place I could suggest you start fishing is the Lions Park in West Liberty. The fish run on the smaller side but it is easy to wade and a good place to get the feel before moving on to more challenging sections, it has just a few place's you will need to watch the back cast. You can view My West Liberty Album to get a Idea what it looks like.
Hare's Ear, Pheasant tail and Prince Nymphs are My main stays in this section.

Good Luck but be careful the Mad has a way of getting in the blood and before you know you will be out their on a 10 degree day swinging Nymphs in a river that very closely resembles the inside of a slurpie machine!!!
    Ciao

well if your up there, I'm sure you know were Urbana and Bellfountaine are. Anyway, there's a beautifull spring creek called the Mad river right up your alley. I'm from Cinci. and I fish there a lot, bout two hour drive. Its a spring creek so you gotta be very stealthy and downright stalk the stream bank. But once you get quietly and anonymously positioned, you got nothing but healthy populations of brown trout to charm, some reaching great size. My friend and I have caught many browns up to 20in in the Mad. Look up Mad River Outfitters in Columbus and theyll point ya in the right direction.
